Decimal storage units
Kilobytes (kB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB) use powers of 1,000. For example, one GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes.
Binary storage units
Kibibytes (KiB), mebibytes (MiB), gibibytes (GiB) and tebibytes (TiB) use powers of 1,024. One GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Why drive sizes can look smaller
Storage manufacturers commonly label capacity with decimal units, while some operating systems display binary-sized values using decimal-looking labels. That convention difference can make the reported number appear lower.
Bits are different from bytes
This converter uses bytes and byte-based units. Network speeds are often quoted in bits per second; eight bits equal one byte, before protocol overhead or other real-world limits.
