What the word counter measures
The tool reports words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, estimated reading time and the most frequent meaningful words. Counts update as you type, so it works for quick drafts, notes and copy checks.
How words and characters are counted
Sequences of letters or numbers are treated as words, including words with an internal apostrophe or hyphen. Character totals include every typed character, while the no-spaces total removes whitespace. Results can differ from a word processor because counting rules are not universal.
Reading-time estimate
Reading time uses a simple pace of about 200 words per minute. Technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary and reading aloud can take longer, so treat the number as a practical estimate.
